The car valet finishing touch: how to make your car smell freshly valeted

The car valet finishing touch: how to make your car smell freshly valeted

The quick answer

Valet from the top down and the inside out, let it dry, then finish with scent. A light mist of fabric spray on the seats and a fresh diffuser on the mirror is the step that makes it smell valeted. Both together are £21.98 and ship free.

A home valet gets the car clean. What makes it feel like a professional job is the last two minutes: the smell when you open the door. Here is a simple routine you can do on the drive, finishing with the step most people skip.

Drift Mist diffuser, fabric spray and boxes in a clean car

What you need

  • Bin bags and a vacuum with a crevice tool
  • Two microfibre cloths and an interior cleaner
  • A soft brush for vents and seams
  • Glass cleaner
  • A fabric spray and a fresh hanging diffuser for the finish

Step 1: Empty everything

Take out the mats, bags, bottles and anything in the door pockets and under the seats. Clean space is the base for everything else.

Step 2: Top down, inside out

Brush dust out of the vents and seams first, then wipe the dashboard, steering wheel, door cards and cup holders. Working from the top down means dust falls onto areas you have not cleaned yet.

Step 3: Vacuum properly

Slide the seats forward and back so you reach the rails, then do the carpets, seats and boot. Shake out the mats and vacuum them outside the car.

Step 4: Glass last

Clean the inside of the windows and mirrors last, so you are not wiping dust back onto clear glass.

Step 5: Let it dry

Leave the doors open for a few minutes and put the mats back only once they are fully dry. A damp mat will undo the whole job.

Step 6: The finishing touch

This is the step that makes it smell like a valet, not just a clean. Give the seats and mats a light mist of our fabric spray, then hang a fresh diffuser on the mirror. Set it up with our five step guide and start light.
